ACT/SAT INFORMATION:



ACT TEST DATE AND REGISTRATION/PHOTO UPLOAD DEADLINES




ACT (American College Test)

- This test is the assessment most colleges in South Dakota and most other states use as part of their entrance requirements.

- Most technical schools do not require it – but that depends on the school and sometimes the program. Make sure you know if your school might require it.

- The ACT is given at various test centers. Pierre is a test center for every test date. Mobridge is also a test center for the test dates in October, December, and April. Gettysburg will be a test date in April. There are other test centers across the state as well.


When to take the ACT:

Most juniors take this exam is in the April of their junior year or the following June. You may want to choose the April or February test date if you think you will take it more than once. Some seniors take it- or retake it the following October – but it is recommended you take the test earlier.

Note on calculator usage: You may use a calculator on the math portion of the test. The problems can be done without a calculator but it is recommended that you use one. Students must bring their own calculator – see the registration booklet on the calculator requirements and a list of prohibited calculators.

ACT Study Materials/Programs Available:


- USE THE METHOD TEST PREP program on the SDMyLife.com website to study! Short quizzes, tutorials, full length tests, etc...


ACT Study Book – available from the library and the guidance office. The library also has CDs and flash cards


- Go to www.March2Success.com for FREE online test preparation for the ACT of SAT.


- Go to www.actstudent.org/testprep - FOR FREE ACT test preparation suggestions and a complete practice test including the Writing Test.


Note on calculator usage: You may use a calculator on the math portion of the test. The problems can be done without a calculator but it is recommended that you use one. Students must bring their own calculator – see the registration booklet on the calculator requirements and a list of prohibited calculators.


ACT Writing Assessment: Make sure you have checked the requirements of the schools in which you are interested. If you have to take the writing assessment – they REQUIRE you to take the ENTIRE ACT again. ACT does not allow for students just taking the Writing Assessment portion of the ACT.



GUIDELINES ACT FEE WAIVER INCOME

You may be able to take the ACT two times for free if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Your family receives public assistance.

  • Student is a ward of the state/student resides in a foster home

  • Student participates in the free or reduced-price lunch program at school

  • Student’s total family income as at or below the following maximum amounts

ACT will grant a one-time test registration FEE WAIVER if you meet the above guidelines or if 1. your family receives public assistance; 2. You are a ward of the state or in a foster home; 3. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)

- This is also a test that is used for entrance into college.

- Most colleges will take either the ACT or SAT but there are some larger out of state schools that require it.

- There is the general SAT assessment.

- There is also an assortment of SAT subject tests. Some schools require you to take a few of these, too.

- See me if you do not know what test is required for entrance to the colleges you are interested in.
